Before I traveled to Krakow, I never thought of Poland as a must see country to visit, but Krakow definitely changed my mind. From the old town to the castle, I was never bored during my visit. On top of that, I also had the opportunity to visit Auschwitz, which is an eye-opening experience on its own (I will be writing another blog post dedicated solely to that experience). In total, I spent two days in Krakow, Poland with my mom and it was one of my favorite places I traveled to while I was in Europe both because it was beautiful, but also because I got to experience it with my favorite person.
I absolutely love visiting the different churches in a city when I am traveling and Krakow was no different. In the main square there is a tiny church, St. Adalbert. This baroque 18th century building was a pleasant surprise to run into when exploring Karkow's main square. The ceiling of the church was by far my favorite part of the entire building. There was a skylight that illuminated the baby blue ceiling and the gold accents below.
Krakow is also home to Wawel Castle and the dragon's den. Dragons seem to be a staple of Krakow's tourism. They are everywhere, from keychains to statues to snow globes. This is no different with the castle. Wawel Castle has a dragons den that you can explore. The entrance to the den includes a small door and a winding staircase that brings you down to a cave, or the dragon's den. It slowly grows colder as you approach the bottom, which was nice on the day I got to explore the den as it was incredibly hot outside and allowed me to cool off before I went back to the outside world. The den is nothing special, just a regular old cave, but it is still cool to say you've been in a dragon den. When you leave the cave, you end up right next to the river with the castle walls towering behind you. To top it off, there is a statue of a dragon at the exit that blows real fire.
In Krakow, you may notice there are a ton of horse drawn carriages driving around the old town. Take a ride! There are a couple different packages you can choose from, depending on how much time you want to spend on the ride. My mom and I took one our first night in Krakow and the driver brought us to see the major points of interest. This was especially nice because then we knew what we wanted to see the next day when we started exploring the city. It was especially cool because we took the ride at night when everything was lit up and it wasn't too hot outside, so we weren't miserable in the hot sun on our ride. You may only have one opportunity to see Krakow via horse drawn carriage, so why not take the adventure while you have the chance?
I could go on and on about Krakow, but I am going to keep this short and sweet. If you are looking for a cool town to visit in Poland, check out Krakow! It is a spunky town. It is also close to Auschwitz, so if you want to make a day trip to visit it, Krakow is the town for you.
Extra Tip: If you are looking for something interesting to do to pass time, away from the normal tourist sites, check out the wax museum in Krakow! They have a ton of wax figures and the details in the figures are mind blowing and definitely something cool to see if you have time!
